French Valley's Discovery Hangar Closes for Lunch. The Library Next Door Doesn't.

October 29, 2026

From the outside, the French Valley Discovery Hangar and the French Valley Library keep the same schedule. Both are open Monday through Saturday, both open at 10 a.m., both close at 6 p.m., and both are dark on Sundays. The difference is in the middle of the day. The Hangar closes from 1:15 to 2:45 p.m., and the library stays open straight through.

That 90-minute break shapes the whole Skyview Road campus. Plan a visit around it, and the two buildings and the pedestrian bridge between them fit together into one easy outing, with the library's free November and December calendar filling in around the Hangar's hours.

Three Projects That Opened on the Same Saturday

Riverside County opened the whole campus at once. The Discovery Hangar, the French Valley Early Learning Center and the Skyview Road Pedestrian Bridge all had their ribbon-cutting on Saturday, Aug. 8, 2026, and the county's September newsletter calls that day the bridge's official opening. According to the Press-Enterprise, the Hangar and Early Learning Center project cost $18.7 million, and the county runs the museum. The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved its admission fees in July.

The addresses sit almost side by side. The library is at 31526 Skyview Road and the Hangar is at 31530. Both list Winchester as the mailing city, which is worth remembering when you type the address into a map app. Skyview Road runs between Highway 79/Winchester Road and Pourroy Road.

The county clearly meant for these buildings to be visited together. In a social media post quoted by the Press-Enterprise, Supervisor Chuck Washington said the bridge "will create a safe and convenient connection to the Library, Discovery Hangar and Early Learning Center, making it easier for families to enjoy all three community spaces." The Hangar's split schedule is what turns that idea into a real plan.

What's Inside the Hangar, and How Long It Takes

The Hangar is about 13,000 square feet, and its focus is French Valley Airport and the area's aviation history. The museum's homepage lists these exhibits:

  • Flight Through Time, a walk through the history of aviation
  • Become a Pilot, where an augmented reality setup puts visitors in the pilot's role
  • Flight Station, where visitors build paper airplanes and launch them

The Hangar's visitor FAQ puts admission at $9 per person. It says all ages are welcome and that many of the activities suit toddlers and older children best. When the Press-Enterprise visited on Aug. 14, its photos showed families at the interactive displays and kids sailing paper airplanes.

That's a manageable visit for a young child, and the hours split the day into two windows. The morning window runs 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and the afternoon window runs 2:45 to 6 p.m. Either one is long enough to see everything. The trick is choosing which window fits what's happening at the library that day.

Early press coverage listed the Hangar as open 10 to 6 without a break. The museum's own FAQ now shows the split schedule and says hours may change for special events, programs or holidays. The Hangar's contact page lists (951) 304-5511 for visit questions.

The Library Calendar That Fits Around It

The Riverside County Library System's calendar for the French Valley branch has recurring programs through mid-December. Some fall right before a Hangar window opens, and some fall inside one. Here's how the published November and December sessions line up with the Hangar's hours:

Day Library program Hangar window that pairs with it
Tuesdays, Nov. 10, 17, 24 and Dec. 1, 8, 15 Children's Storytime, ages 2 to 5, 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Morning window, open until 1:15 p.m.
Wednesdays, Nov. 18, 25 and Dec. 2, 9 Reading Buddies, kids paired with teen volunteers, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Afternoon window, from 2:45 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 5 Spanish Storytime, ages 0 to 5, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Morning window
Thursday, Nov. 12 Baby Social, ages 6 to 18 months, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Morning window
Fridays, Nov. 6 and 13 Happy Hobby Hour, adults 18+, 4 to 5:45 p.m. Afternoon window

Tuesday is the cleanest pairing. The early storytime ends at 11:15, the late one ends at 12:15, and either leaves an hour or more in the Hangar before the midday closure. Spanish Storytime is the morning this post comes out, Thursday, Nov. 5, so families who catch it can walk next door afterward and still have time before 1:15.

Reading Buddies works the other way around. The Hangar's afternoon window opens at 2:45, so a family can do the exhibits first and be back at the library for the 4:30 session. The library's listing asks families to choose a time slot and stay with their child during the session.

Happy Hobby Hour is for grown-ups. The library sets up a 3D printer, sewing machines, a Cricut, crochet and scrapbooking supplies for adults 18 and older. It runs from 4 to 5:45 on the two Fridays, entirely inside the Hangar's afternoon window. A household with two adults could split up, with one at the hobby table and the other next door with the kids at Flight Station.

The library also hosts an Adult Inclusive Social Hour for adults 18 and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It meets at noon on Wednesdays, Nov. 18 and 25 and Dec. 2, 9 and 16, and creative supplies are provided. It ends at 12:45, half an hour before the Hangar's midday break.

The 1:15 to 2:45 Gap, and Where It Goes

During the Hangar's break, the library next door is open and free, with no program schedule to follow. Thanks to the bridge, you can also walk there from homes on the other side of French Valley Creek.

The county's project updates describe the Skyview Road Pedestrian Bridge as a pedestrian and bicycle connection. It runs from the library on the northwest side to Skyview Road at Via Santiago and Algarve Avenue on the southeast side. The Press-Enterprise reported the bridge is 18 feet wide, and the county's project page notes that it was also designed with emergency access in mind.

For households on the southeast side, the creek used to mean getting in the car. Now a midday break can be a walk home for lunch and a walk back by 2:45. For everyone else, the library's open hours cover the 90 minutes the Hangar is closed, so there's no reason to leave the block.

The Weeks When Both Calendars Change

The neat schedule above breaks down around the holidays. The library's November and December calendars list these closures:

  1. Wednesday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day
  2. Thursday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 27, Thanksgiving
  3. Friday, Dec. 25, Christmas Day
  4. Friday, Jan. 1, 2027, New Year's Day

The Hangar's FAQ says its hours may vary for holidays. Veterans Day lands on a Wednesday this year. If you're planning to visit Nov. 11, call the Hangar at (951) 304-5511 first, because the library will be closed either way.

The library's recurring programs also wind down in December. The last Reading Buddies session is Dec. 9, the last Children's Storytime is Dec. 15 and the last Adult Inclusive Social Hour is Dec. 16. After that, the late-December weeks look like a plain Hangar visit with free library time to fill the midday break.

The Early Learning Center opened the same day as the rest of the campus. Visitor details for it aren't listed alongside the Hangar's and the library's, so for now a Skyview Road outing means the library, the Hangar and the walk between them.

I've watched French Valley grow for a long time, and what's been missing is a place like this that you can walk to, with a schedule a family can plan a Tuesday around. If you've found your own favorite window at the Hangar, or you're curious how new community spaces like this one change daily life on your side of the creek, Sabrina Maricic would love to hear about it.
